This Week's Top Tech Gadget Searches September 20, 2007 It seems that every month, a new tech gadget that purports to organize your life, while allowing you to play games and watch downloaded movies, appears on the market. While I personally still use a clunky cell phone that looks like a refugee from the late 90s and barely know how to send a text message, many web users are constantly searching for the Next Big Thing in tech gadgets. This week, the Lycos 50 takes a look at our top tech gadget searches. The iPod is our number one search, garnering 73% more interest than the PSP at #2. On September 5, the iPod nano was updated to include a tiny video screen and snazzy new colors. Just what I need for my rapidly deteriorating eyesight! Gaming systems are also very popular with Sony's handheld PSP (PlayStation Portable) receiving 99% more search activity than the Nintendo Wii, which was released last December, and 121% more activity than the Playstation 3. Despite the craze that erupted when Apple released the iPhone in June, the T-Mobile Sidekick is still our most popular PDA search, just barely edging out the iPhone by only 2%. Meanwhile, the positively ancient-seeming Blackberry comes in third. (Incidentally, remember when Paris Hilton's Sidekick was hacked and there were all of those skanky pictures and we found out that she randomly had Stephen King's phone number and there were all those messages from Lindsay Lohan making fun of Jessica Simpson and whatnot? Yeah. That was awesome.) HDTV also makes a strong showing at #3, as television viewers have become increasingly accustomed to the fact that they can now count Chad Michael Murray's pores while watching "One Tree Hill" or whatever. August 30, 2007 The most searched musical artists of the week may be dominated more by scandal than musical talents. (When was the last time Britney Spears actually recorded a track?) But some stars are actually generating interest without accidentally exposing themselves onstage. Shakira has been a presence on the Lycos 50 for the past 13 weeks. The belly-dancing starlet has achieved international fame. According to the United World Chart, Shakira is the fourth most successful artist so far of the 2000s thus far. I am also always happy to see that Madonna has maintained a presence on the Lycos 50. I'll admit it - I think Madonna is awesome. "The Immaculate Collection" is one of my favorite albums of all time, so much so that I performed "Like a Prayer" in a high school lip syncing competition (and regretfully, came in second, an injustice about which I will always be bitter - if only YouTube existed back then!). In May, Madonna released "Hey You" in anticipation for Live Earth. She is currently directing her first film, "Filth and Wisdom," and is working on her next album, which is set to be released in November. Recently, Madonna has been under fire from Malawian authorities over her adoption of Malawian infant, David Banda. She reportedly wants to adopt another Malawian infant (take that, Jolie!). On a more serious note, it was quite shocking to wake up on Monday morning and hear the sad news that actor, Owen Wilson, may have made a suicide attempt over the weekend. Owen has had an incredibly successful career - both commercially and artistically - with films like "Bottle Rocket," "Zoolander," "The Royal Tenenbaums," and "You, Me, and Dupree." It seemed that he had everything in life going for him. However, appearances can certainly be deceiving. According to various sources such as "Access Hollywood," police logs confirmed the attempted suicide. Owen has since been hospitalized, and has pulled out of his next film, "Tropic Thunder," which had been already in production in Hawaii. Search interest in Owen Wilson grew 2,700% from Saturday to Thursday. We all hope that Owen gets better soon. Serving jail time on bombing charges while pregnant with Tupac, she faced a sentence of up to three years in prison. At first opportunity, Afeni had Tupac's birth certificate changed to reflect his real name, Tupac Amaru, which means "royal serpent" and was the name of an Inca leader and warrior who came to power in 1570.
